GARDEN SPOT
IT'S TIME TO...-
Cut back ornamental grasses to just above ground level before new growth begins.
Summer & fall flowering clematis, which produce buds on new wood, can be pruned to the strongest canes.
Sow seeds for peas, carrots, scallions, radishes, lettuce & chard directly in the garden.
Now is the time to prune & fertilize your roses, but NOT ramblers. You can also plant new roses now but do not fertilize them until they bloom.
Pot up summer blooming bulbs. Keep indoors by a sunny window until danger of frost has passed.
Divide late summer & fall blooming perennials now, like hosta, daylilies, asters, & rudbeckie. Leave those that flower in the spring alone.
Map out areas in the garden where you want to plant more spring bulbs in the fall.
Apply a small amount of balanced fertilizer around spring flowering bulbs when they are in bloom to promote green foliage & vigorous root development.
